5 Simple Ways to Start Each Busy Morning Healthy

Before having kids, I naively had this dream of what mornings with my children would look like. I imagined it would involve them quietly slipping into my bed for some morning snuggles and all of us laying there peacefully and maybe reading a book before we got up to enjoy the day. I would then go to the living room and do a workout video while they play nicely. The morning workout would certainly be followed up by a hearty, healthy breakfast. I was naïve.

Don’t get me wrong, that type of instance does happen . . . maybe once every six months.

Reality set in after we started actually having children. My mornings became filled with alarm clock buzzing, children fighting over the same toy, frantic rushing around trying to get everyone dressed with a naked toddler always somehow escaping before I can get clothes on him, and making sure the kids are fed.

Work out?  If I wanted to accidentally trample a child, sure! For some reason, the moment I pop that awesome workout dvd into the player, the baby suddenly wants to be in my arms even though she had ignored me all morning up until that point and the toddler starts playing roulette with my legs to see how much he can weave in and out of them without getting stepped on.

And breakfast? Ha! IF I remember to eat, it’s usually a quick granola bar or something I can grab on the go, with nutrition being more of an afterthought.

If any of this sounds similar to your type of morning, don’t lose hope! I have discovered five simple things you can incorporate for a healthy start to your day while multitasking in the process! You can have a busy morning and still be healthy.

Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up

Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning actually has some extra benefits to it that you might not realize. It helps jumpstart your metabolism and re-hydrates your body after a full night of sleep and not drinking a single thing.

This might seem almost too simple, but hey, I’m up for anything that can help get my metabolism going in the morning!

Do oil pulling while getting ready for the day

Oil pulling is something that has become quite popular over the past few years. It involves swishing around 1 tbsp of coconut oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes.

When done properly and consistently for several days in a row, oil pulling helps release toxins from the body. Because it involves releasing toxins, you must make sure you spit the oil out when you are finished swishing it and do NOT swallow it. Otherwise, you will be swallowing said toxins.

There are several benefits to oil pulling, but some of the main ones (in addition to detoxification) include diminished headaches, clearer skin, whitened and stronger teeth, and increased energy.

The awesome thing about oil pulling is that it can be done while you are getting ready for your day. You can pretty much do anything during that 10-20 minutes of swishing, as long as it doesn’t require talking.

(Oil pulling can be done with various types of oils, but coconut oil has proven itself to be the best for this.)

Incorporate simple exercises throughout your morning

You don’t have to to the gym or do a workout video in the morning to fit in some exercising. Do some squats while you’re oil pulling and fixing up your hair or some leg lifts while making breakfast or changing diapers. If you have stairs, try running up and down them instead of walking. Incorporating exercises throughout your morning routine is easy and effective! You might not feel like you’re doing much, but every little bit helps in the long run.

Pre-make your breakfast the night before

I am a huge fan of pre-made breakfasts! I love taking an afternoon to make homemade waffles and breakfast burritos and freezing them so that I can simply pop one of them in the microwave each morning.

But, in an effort to make healthier breakfast choices, overnight oats have become my all-time favorite pre-made breakfast. They are super easy and take only a few minutes to prep the night before. You simply mix oats and a bunch of other ingredients and then pour it all into a mason jar to keep in the fridge overnight. The morning results are amazing! You get a creamy and delicious breakfast that almost tastes like dessert. I’ll take that over anything any day!

Today, I’m going to share with you my Chunky Monkey Overnight Oats recipe.

Chunky Monkey Overnight Oats

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup honey or vanilla Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup (heaping) gluten-free old fashioned rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 ripe banana (mashed)
  • 1 TB ground flaxseed meal
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 TB natural peanut butter
  • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1-2 TB honey
  • pinch of salt

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and then pour into a mason jar. Seal the jar and store in the refrigerator overnight. Open the next morning, garnish with sliced banana and chocolate chips and enjoy!

Drink your veggies

I’ve always been interested in juicing veggies because I really struggle to consume the proper amount of vegetables each day. But, my busy mornings just don’t avail for the time it takes to do juicing. Not to mention, I don’t even own a juicer which obviously makes it even more difficult.

After browsing through the grocery section of Walmart, I’ve discovered a really good alternative! My kids even love it too!

They have V8® Veggie Blends: Berry Bliss and V8® Veggie Blends: Caribbean Greens. In an effort to be healthier and consume more veggies each day, V8® Veggie Blends have become an easy, affordable way for me to meet my recommended daily intake of vegetables.

I can drink an 8 oz. glass of the juice drink with my breakfast and very easily consume one full serving of veggies (which is equivalent to ½ cup).
