Before having kids, I naively had this dream of what mornings with my children would look like. I imagined it would involve them quietly slipping into my bed for some morning snuggles and all of us laying there peacefully and maybe reading a book before we got up to enjoy the day. I’m going against the modern grain and teaching my children that not everyone wins, and here’s why.

They were at it again. I could hear my boys squabbling over yet another episode of “Special Agent Oso.” It had come to the end of the episode where the stuffed bear agent “rewards” the viewing children with a special medal.

My boys always, without fail, will start arguing long before the medal part shows up. They argue over who is going to be the winner of the medal. Sometimes it gets pretty heated. They will even get physical with each other on occasion. It’s actually quite comical for me to witness.

When they first started fighting over the silly medal on this tv show, I almost stepped in.

What exactly would I be teaching them by saying that? To be honest, I’m still tempted to squelch the competitive fires by making those statements because it would just be easier on me. I wouldn’t have to deal with the constant arguments. But, my goal is to teach my children about life and I refuse to teach them that everyone wins.  I won’t start now.

Because it’s not true.

This might, perhaps, be the most obvious and most simple answer, and yet it is the most ignored. Not everyone wins. That’s just a fact of life.

I want my children to face life understanding that there really isn’t a prize for everyone. When they come to their adult lives, they will see that not everyone gets promoted, not everyone receives recognition, not everyone gets a raise and so on. It could eventually make them feel entitled.

Over the past ten years, a growing trend has been emerging. We now have schools that no longer offer just 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes. They offer somewhat ridiculous prizes to every single person so that not one person feels left out. Instead of treating children equally, this just gives them a sense of entitlement. It makes them feel like they are owed something, whether or not they have worked for it.

As a result, we now have a generation of upcoming adults who don’t care about trying or working hard. They feel like they are owed the world without trying. A sense of entitlement begins young, and the idea that everyone wins has been one of the attributions to that.

It destroys motivation.

If everyone wins, then there is no reason to work hard. Why bother trying when you know that in the end everyone wins? If our children don’t have a goal to work for, then there is no motivation in trying.

I loved competitions all throughout my childhood. I tried so hard because I desperately wanted to win at something. I didn’t win often, but there was always the satisfaction in trying and doing my best. It also gave me goals to work for next time.

If everyone wins, that motivation is zapped. What’s the point? There is no real goal to work for.

It gives them false expectations.

Along with feeling entitled, letting my children think that everyone wins just offers them false expectations for the future. They will come to expect to always be rewarded. With this mentality, they would receive a huge slap in the face when the real world does not hand them rewards for all they’ve done. Once again, understanding that they must work hard and that they might not always “win” will help them push to be better.

SO, WHAT AM I GOING TO TEACH MY CHILDREN INSTEAD?

Everyone is important.

Though not everyone will win every time, everyone is significant. My children will grow up knowing that they matter and because they matter, they must work hard at whatever they do. They must realize that they are always a part of a bigger picture.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (I Corinthians 10:31).

Though they might sometimes feel insignificant in comparison to others, they are important. God created each of them for a unique purpose. They have been divinely molded.

My children will know that when they work hard, even if they aren’t rewarded, they are playing an important role for a bigger purpose. Even in the corporate world, a company could not function properly without the custodians who work tirelessly each night to keep the buildings clean.

The same goes for anything in life.

Though you might not always “win,” that doesn’t mean you aren’t important and doesn’t excuse you from working hard.

Everyone is unique with different strengths.

If everyone was a construction worker, we would have no musicians. The world would be silent. I could go on and on with multiple “if everyone was” statements. But, it’s so true. God did not create all of us with the same strength. He did that on purpose. We are all unique and all have different strengths.

It is not illogical to expect that a child whose strength is in music will not win very often at sports. The same goes for it in reverse. Granted, there are people who are well-rounded in all areas. But, when we say that everybody wins, we diminish the true strengths in people. We then strip away the motivation for higher achievement.

But then what about the children who really struggle and not winning makes them feel worse?

Encouragement starts in the home. Instead of allowing our children to think everyone wins, we must grab the real bull by the horns and encourage their own strengths. We must be willing to recognize the strengths our children do have and not push them into something they might not otherwise enjoy or be good at.

We need to encourage them to see that not winning is good motivation for working harder. We can help them set goals for doing better next time. Not winning is a propellent for improvement and possible future success.

Instead of removing our children from the responsibility of working harder, let’s help them see that failure is just a stepping stone to greatness.

The most recognized and influential individuals did not get their success from believing that everyone wins.

I have this peach-colored, stretchy kind of shirt that had been sitting in my shirt drawer for what seemed like forever. It had been a while since I’d last worn it because it seemed to always fit the wrong way.

We find that before Jesus performed one of the greatest miracles of the Bible, in bringing Lazarus back to life, He wept.

There have been many speculations about why Jesus wept, and I’d have to say I disagree with many of them.

Couldn’t it just be that Jesus was showing us that it’s okay to grieve? Jesus had lost his best friend to death, the very thing that had become a consequence to the separation between He and all of His creation. Yes, Jesus knew He was about to bring Lazarus back to life, but that doesn’t mean He didn’t love Lazarus enough to grieve over his death.

Grief is the perfect transition into new life.

Grief allows us to acknowledge the pain we feel, instead of stuffing it inside and pretending it’s not there. Without the transition of grief, we stay lost in the past and refuse to let ourselves come to terms with the loss.

It is gut-wrenchingly painful, but it is necessary. With each tear shed comes healing. The groaning of our souls comes pouring out, and an opening is made for new life. An opening is made for Christ to heal and demonstrate His perfect love.

It’s after midnight, and I’ve just put my third son back to bed for the umpteenth time. (By the way, what number exactly is “umpteenth?” I’ve always wondered this.) I’m tired. I’m really tired. I want to throw in the towel and go to sleep right now.

I used to feel like it was always going to be the same old, same old. Day in and day out felt like a constant cycle of repetition.

I knew I had to do something. I knew I had to change it, and I did. I realized there were little things that I could do each day to take care of myself and not feel like I was stuck. When I started implementing these things, I no longer felt like the mom who was trapped in a circle of repetitious life.

I started feeling more motivated to do other things, to break beyond the barrier of sameness.

You see, as a mom you spend so much time caring for your family that you tend to lose a sense of yourself. You stop caring so much for yourself and that’s when you fall into the seemingly never-ending waves of the same thing over and over again.

You see, taking care of yourself isn’t a matter of selfishness. It is a matter of helping yourself be the best you can be for both you and your family. When you’re taking care of yourself, you’re also taking care of your family at the same time, because caring for yourself helps you mentally and emotionally.

It’s amazing what making just a few simple changes to your morning can do for the rest of your day. You can literally set the tone for your day right from the beginning.

I will preface this to say that it does require discipline. If you’re like me and have children in school, it requires getting up a bit earlier. Or it just simply requires getting up at all.

SET A CONSISTENT WAKE TIME

I’ll be honest, I used to just wake up whenever the kids crawled into bed and woke me up. But, it was inconsistent. Some mornings, they were poking at my face at 6 a.m. Other times, it might not have been until 7:30 or even 8. My body was becoming exhausted by the inconsistency, and I didn’t even realize it.

GET DRESSED

I can hear you chuckling at this one because you know it’s true. There are some days when you don’t even want to get dressed and pajamas just feel plain awesome. Now, I know I’m speaking mostly to stay-at-home moms right now, but this principal can still somewhat apply to working moms depending on where you work.

A few days ago, a friend of mine had come over to chat and out of the blue she said, “Lydia, you always look so put together! I love your outfit, down to the pearl earrings!”

You know what’s funny? The most going out I had done that day was drop my son off at school and then pick him back up from school.

But, I didn’t dress for going out. I dressed for home. I dressed this way because I knew I would be more productive this way . . . and I was!

Urinary tract infections and/or wetting the bed. When a child has been regularly touched sexually, he sometimes becomes “out of touch,” so to speak, with his ability to use the bathroom. Everything has been violated and wetting the bed becomes a problem again. Also, a big thing for girls is urinary tract infections.

Become withdrawn, depressed, angry, agitated, anxious, overly emotional. If your child has been sexually abused, he or she will very likely show signs of emotional distress or attitude changes that are outside the norm for him. It could be that your child is just going through an adjustment period in his life that is affecting his attitude. But, if there seems to be nothing that should be affecting him this way, try to watch more to how he reacts and what he is reacting to. The most common emotional struggles of a sexually abused child are depression, anxiety, and meltdowns/crying about everything or extreme fear of upsetting others.

The above signs are just a few of the signs and symptoms of a child that has been sexually abused, but they are the main ones. I can tell you that I suffered from every single one of these.

Oftentimes, more symptoms sprout up as victims grow older, such as promiscuity, lack of hygeine, eating disorders, self-harm, and the list goes on.

I made this ham and cheese stromboli last night, and it was a huge hit with my kids!

Who knew that a twist on an old classic like ham and cheese could be so delicious?

I still remember the taste and smell of the ham and cheese sandwiches that my mom would make for my school lunches when I was younger. I loved ham sandwiches!

Can I be honest here though? Did anybody else struggle with the way the cheese kind of half-melted, half-conformed to the bread. I don’t know why, but I always had a really difficult time with the cheese. It just made the sandwich a bit inedible to me.

I remember carefully trying to scrape the cheese off so that I could salvage enough of the bread to make a simple ham sandwich. Please tell me I’m not the only one or else I’ll feel a little weird. The cheese part just didn’t do it for me.

I would, however, have eaten all of it had it been in stromboli form! Friends, I love stromboli. I seriously do! One awesome thing about stromboli is that the sky is the limit! With the right dough recipe, you can make pretty much any stromboli that is going to be awesome! You can do the classic stromboli or breakfast or dessert or a spin-off like I did!

My mother-in-law has the absolute perfect stromboli dough recipe that I’m going to share with you. I will also show you how to make the perfect ham and cheese stromboli and delicious dipping sauce to go with it!

Before I do though, I need to tell you about something that’s on my heart. I just can’t believe it.

My oldest is going into kindergarten.

Where has time gone? I feel like just yesterday he was a baby. Today, he came up to me to give me a hug, and I looked at him. I really looked at him. When did this baby turn into a handsome little boy? He’s growing up, and I’m not liking it.

I’m now finding myself looking to pinterest for lunchbox ideas. It’s so strange. But, after making this ham and cheese stromboli the other night, I know I have that as a lunch option. One great thing about stromboli is that it tastes awesome the next day, and it can be eaten cold or warm. Leftover stromboli is always one of my husband’s favorite lunches, and now it looks like my son will start to be able to enjoy the spoils as well!

Strange. I need to not think about it right now.

Let’s make some ham and cheese stromboli!

You are going to need the following ingredients:

 I use a stand mixer to make the dough, but it can be done by hand or with a handheld mixer. It just takes a lot longer. So, adapt the instructions accordingly.

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Add 1 1/2 cups of the flour, the sugar, yeast, and salt to your mixing bowl and stir it together.

Add the warm water.

*TIP: To make sure your water is not too warm to kill the yeast, use tap water. Keep checking the temperature of the water with the inside of your wrist. The water should feel pretty warm but comfortable to your wrist. If it’s too hot to the touch for your wrist, then it’s too hot and will kill your yeast.*

Using your beater attachment, mix everything in the bowl on medium-high speed for about two minutes until it turns soupy.

Attach your dough hook and slowly add in your remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time.

Do not feel like you need to add all of the flour. I honestly don’t even really measure the flour anymore. I gauge it’s readiness based on how the dough is mixing. Just add the flour until the dough starts pulling away from the bowl and is no longer goopy at all.

You’ll know it’s ready when it looks like this.

While your dough is sitting to rise for a bit, prep your dough station.

I have a dough board, but I prefer to just scrub the kitchen table and use that.

Grab two cups or bowls and separate your egg, with the yolk in one and the white in the other.

Add the oil to the cup with the yolk and stir it together.

Grab your dough and knead it a little bit. Add more flour if needed.

Separate it into two pieces, and then roll out the pieces into rectangles that are approximately 9″ x 12″.

Divide your egg mixture among the two dough rectangles and, using a spatula or the back of the spoon, spread it over the dough.

Sprinkle the herb de provence on top. Use as much or as little as you would like.

Next, add your cheese and meat.

I am not a pre-packaged meat and cheese kind person because of all of the junk that usually goes into it (like binders, msg, gluten, etc), especially meats.

I do, however, really like the purchase lasix. They don’t have binders, msg, gluten or trans fat. They are truly a trusted deli brand.

You can actually taste the quality in their products. I have to admit that I was popping pieces of the ham into my mouth as I was building the stromboli. It’s so good!

Anyway, let’s finish the stromboli!

Grab the cup or bowl with the egg white and whisk it until it is foamy. Then, using a basting brush, brush the egg white all over the strombolis.

Place your strombolis into the oven for 25-30 minutes, until they are a nice brown on top.

When they are finished, let them sit to cool a bit before slicing and serving.

And there you have it; your very own delicious ham and cheese stromboli!

When I made the stromboli for my kids the other night, I also whipped up a homemade dipping sauce that they absolutely loved!

To make the sauce, just mix together the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup mayo
  • 1 TB spicy brown mustard
  • 1 TB worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Our family has been going through a season . . . a forever long season, it feels like. I’m in a season of diapers, potty-training, and bed-wetting. Does anybody else have potty-training at the top of the list of their fun activities? No? Yeah, me neither.

I have one son, almost 6, who sleeps like a rock at night and barely makes it to the bathroom.

I have another son who is almost 4, and I’m desperately trying to get him to potty-train but there’s a lot of resistance. It’s been fun. (I hope you can sense my sarcasm.)

Then, I have another son that is almost 3, who is so excited about the idea of going on the potty but then hops off as soon as I put him on. I’m trying to get him to understand what going on the potty actually means.

“We don’t just go ON the potty; we go potty IN the potty.” I think I say that a million times a day. Okay, maybe ten, but it feels like a million.

I’ve made it my goal to have the two younger boys potty-trained and my oldest completely waking up before my husband returns from deployment. I’m not sure if we’ll make it, but it’s worth the effort!

I think my oldest may have inherited his deep-sleeping, struggling to make it to the bathroom in time issues from his father. My mother-in-law has stories about my husband having bed-wetting issues when he was a young boy because he would sleep so hard that he just wouldn’t wake up to his screaming bladder. They ended up having to buy this sensory, bed-wetting alarm system to help train his body to wake up when his bladder says it’s time to go.

(Sorry for outing you, babe. It’s okay, you were little. But hey, 1 in 6 kids ages 4-10 wet the bed once or twice a week even after being potty-trained.  So, don’t feel too bad. You weren’t alone. There were many other kids like you; they just didn’t admit it.)

You know what though? To this day, my husband has the uncanny ability to sleep through a screaming bladder and still not wet the bed. His poor kidneys.

Needless to say, potty-training and bed-wetting makes life a little bit stressful and can make the bedroom a dreaded place. I like to hang onto a little thing my mother-in-law likes to say . . . “Hey, at least they won’t be in diapers when they’re 18! They’ll figure it out by then.” I like to run that through my head when I need a good laugh.

I decided it was time to do something cool and fun. My boys have crazy active imaginations, and I wanted to give them a place where they could go and let their imaginations run wild. They can be cowboys, astronauts, fishermen, hikers, anything! That’s when the idea for the imagination tent was born. It’s a little place they can call their own and imagine away.

The only problem is, I can’t sew. Oh, I can sew by hand just fine. But, put me in front of a sewing machine, and I haven’t the least bit idea of knowing what I’m doing.

So, for all those other crafty people out there who also know nothing about using a sewing machine, here is a tutorial for you! I’m going to show you how to make a no-sew canopy imagination tent.

To start, you need:

  • hula hoop (large size)
  • 6 yards of favorite fabric (I had 48″ fabric.)
  • thick jute twine
  • 1-2 spools of large ribbon (1 18 foot spool should be enough)
  • hot glue gun

Okay, to begin, you want to cut four 3″ pieces of ribbon.

Then, follow these next steps carefully:

  • Place one piece of ribbon under the hula hoop.
  • Put a dab of hot glue on the top side of the hula hoop and bring one edge of the ribbon up and attach to the hula hoop.
  • Put a dab of hot glue on top of the attached ribbon end and bring the other end up and attach it.
  • You do not want to pull the ribbon tight. Make sure there is some space hanging underneath that will allow you to weave your twine through.

Then, do this three more times around the edges of your hula hoop.

Next, you are going to cut your fabric into three parts. If you have wider fabric or a smaller hoop, you might only need to cut it in half.

Then, you are going to “sew” fabric with the hot glue. First, start with hemming the bottoms of the pieces by doing lines of glue and folding up the ends. (Make sure you are folding it up on the non-patterned side.)

You will then attach the three pieces together. Placing your pieces side by side, put the two patterned edges together, so that the rough seam is on the inside.

You are going to glue these together, like you see in the picture.

This is what the seam will then look like.

After you glue the three pieces together, “hem” the two open sides like you did with the bottom hem.

Next, you are going to do the loop for the tie-off at the top of the fabric. Lay your ribbon down on the edge of the top of the fabric, leaving at least an inch or so of fabric above the ribbon. Then, wrap the fabric over the ribbon and glue it down making sure to not accidentally glue down the ribbon. You want the ribbon to be free to pull tightly.

Then, cut your twine into four pieces for the length that you need. I did three foot pieces. Weave each piece through the ribbon loops on the hula hoop.

Pull all eight rope edges together and then tie in a big knot at the top.

Wrap your fabric around the hula hoop and pull the ribbon tightly, allowing the fabric to bunch up. You will need to adjust the fabric as it bunches. Then, tie off your ribbon and trim the ends to your liking.

I don’t have any pictures for these next few steps.

But, you are going to want to take two of the pieces of your twine ends and hot glue then together to make a loop for hanging. I recommend using the two inner pieces. Then, cut off the rest of the ends or tuck them around the ropes.

Then, attach a hanging hook to your ceiling. You could probably get away with using a large mug hook, but I recommend using one of the plant hanger hooks.

Finally, hang your diy no-sew canopy imagination tent on the hook. Fill the tent with pillows, books, or whatever else your children would like! There you have it! A completely diy no-sew project requiring absolutely no sewing whatsoever!

My boys absolutely love this tent and are now constantly fighting over who gets to play in it. I have a feeling this is going to become a part of our new “quiet time” areas rotation.

I was crazy. I took the kids and me on a cross-country road trip for a month!

If the title captured your attention, don’t worry, I will explain that later. So . . . I mentioned in previous lasix furosemide buy online that the kids and I took a cross-country road trip back in June. So, where did we go? Well, in a tiny nutshell, this is what our agenda looked like:

  • Oklahoma – visited my oldest sister and her family
  • Kentucky – visited another sister and her family

  • Kentucky – back to my sister’s
  • Branson, Missouri – met up with some old college friends and got to see “Moses” at Sight & Sound
  • Oklahoma – back to my oldest sister’s for another week
  • Texas – visited my husband’s grandmother and got to go to Magnolia Market & The Silos TWICE! (It’s okay; you can be jealous. Ha!)
  • Arizona – stayed with same friends again
  • Home!

Of course, there were some hotel stops along the way, but that was the gist of our road trip. Since SO much occurred on this trip, I’m going to break it up into parts.

I had this goal of making videos every day. Umm, yeah . . . that was a bit of a fail! BUT, I did get two! So, I will be sharing those.

When we left California, it was HOT, and I was so glad to be getting away for a bit!

It was clearly so hot that I felt the need to use the “peace” symbol so many times. Good gracious!

ARIZONA

Anyway, we left California and drove to the cooler climate of Arizona. Ha! Umm, pretty sure it was hotter there. Those poor people. How ever do they survive?

Here’s where a cool story comes in. You’re going to think I’m absolutely nuts.

Before we left for our road trip, I had mentioned it on a Christian moms facebook group that I’m a part of. I can’t remember if I had asked for prayer or something. Well, one of the moms commented on my post and asked if we had places to stay overnight during the trip. When I said we would be using hotels, she offered to open up her home for us when we drove through Arizona! Call me crazy, but I accepted the offer.

I know what you’re all thinking, “What if she was a crazy murderer or psycho or something?”

Oh believe me, thoughts like that swam through my head at first. Sorry, girl! But, I thought long and hard and felt good about it. You guys, I’m so glad I did! I ended up making a new sweet friend who is just awesome and an incredible hostess! (And she makes wicked awesome breakfast cake!)

And here’s the kicker . . . her name is Lydia too! I’ll admit, it did feel kind of odd saying my own name, but it wasn’t too hard after a little while.

OKLAHOMA

After leaving Arizona, we spent a couple days on the road and found a few fun little stops along the way (at gas stations).

One stop was, well, less than pleasant, I have to admit.

I think I seem a lot more snarky in my video than I intended to be. I was just so flabbergasted with the way I was treated. To be fair, she was probably having a bad day. It doesn’t excuse being rude to people, but it does provide a little more perspective on the situation.

After a few days on the road, we finally arrived in Oklahoma. Oh man, I miss my sisters so much, and it was such a blast spending time with my oldest sister! It was so awesome to be able to relax and stay up late and chat.

After spending about a week with my oldest sister, we drove to another sister’s house in Kentucky. I decided to do that drive all in one trek, and that was absolutely stupid. Yeah, never doing that again. But, we made it alive, and I never fell asleep at the wheel. So, I think that just earned me several brownie points!

And once again, I didn’t get a picture with my sister. Ugh!

Kentucky was a whirlwind, and we had a blast! My sister and brother-in-law introduced me to some yummy new wines, and I got a little organization happy and organized my sister’s kitchen/dining room area. I’m a bit obsessed with mason jars and filled her pantry with mason jars with chalkboard labels. She loved it, so I guess the organization freak in me did okay!

I miss my sister to pieces and can’t wait to see her again. This being states away from all of my family really stinks!

I know I didn’t really go into too many details, but if I did, I would be doing vacation posts for forever. I didn’t want this to turn into an epic long post series.

So, you get the crumbs. Sorry, not sorry.
